Why is it that interns seem to get all the credit for the work being done these days? Seriously, let’s take a moment to give a huge shout-out to all the interns out there embarking on their career journeys. We’ve all been in your shoes, and your contributions are genuinely appreciated.
It feels like no matter where you look on social media—be it TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or Facebook—if a corporate account pulls off something cool or out of the ordinary, people are quick to credit the intern. I’m not sure when this trend began, but it’s fascinating. You’ll often find comments like “lit” or “fye” (fire) under viral posts from brands like Taco Bell, showcasing content that aligns perfectly with today’s trends. It’s undeniably clever.
But do I really believe that an intern is behind all this creativity? Unfortunately, no. During my time as a communications intern at Amyris Biotech, I had access to our social channels, but my role was limited to scheduling posts on Sprout Social. The social media managers crafted the final drafts, and my responsibility was simply to schedule our weekly content—nothing more, nothing less.
Then I transitioned to an associate account executive role at GCI Health. Right from my first month, I was given access to our social calendars and entrusted with developing social copy for Sterling K. Brown’s personal posts. However, it wasn’t as straightforward as writing a post and sending it directly to him for approval. The content went through multiple layers of review, and by the time it came back to me for client sharing, it resembled very little of what I originally wrote. This experience taught me how to adapt my writing style to match the voice of whoever I was crafting social copy for.
In conclusion, while interns play a vital role in the creative process, it’s important to recognize that their contributions are part of a larger team effort. Let’s celebrate their hard work while also acknowledging the collaborative nature of social media management!
